Why Your Business Isn't Showing Up on Google (Even With a Website)

Person searching on a laptop

"I already have a website, so why can't anyone find me on Google?" This is one of the most common and most misunderstood frustrations business owners run into. Having a website and being found on Google are two separate things — one doesn't automatically lead to the other.

Google can't show what it hasn't indexed

A brand-new website doesn't appear in search results instantly. Google has to discover it, crawl it, and decide it's worth showing — a process that can take days to weeks for a new site, faster if it's submitted through Google Search Console and listed in a sitemap. If your site is only days old, patience is part of the answer, not just technical fixes.

No Google Business Profile

A huge share of local searches ("restaurant near me," "salon in Ikeja") are answered by Google's map results and business listings, not your actual website. If you haven't claimed and filled out a free Google Business Profile, you're invisible for exactly the searches your local customers are making.

Thin or generic content

A one-line homepage with no real description of what you do, where you're located, or who you serve gives Google very little to match against actual searches. Pages with genuine, specific content — your services explained in plain language, your location clearly stated — rank far better than a page that's mostly a logo and a phone number.

Nobody links to you

Google partly judges trust by who else references your site — other websites linking to you, directory listings, social profiles pointing back to your domain. A site that exists in complete isolation, with zero mentions anywhere else online, has a much harder time earning Google's trust than one with even a few genuine outside links.

What actually moves the needle

Set up and fully complete a Google Business Profile. Make sure your site has real, specific written content, not just images. Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console instead of waiting to be discovered. List your business on relevant Nigerian directories. None of this is complicated — it's just steps that get skipped when a website is treated as "done" the moment it goes live.

A website is necessary to show up on Google — but it isn't sufficient on its own. Getting found takes a few extra, deliberate steps after launch, not just the launch itself.
